Creating Online Feedback Forms/Surveys

Today at the Trident Digital Village, we looked at a number of on-line form services that we could use during our individual projects and through the duration of the project.

I have come across the examples below before as I have previous experience in this area working as a Marketing Director for a international NGO.

The best and most useful free service for create online questionnaires is Google Docs and its form manager.

This service provide unrestricted amount of content  that can be added and dosent cost a penny. However it does have its limitations as to aesthetics and company branding. Its very hard to make this service look bespoke and use graphics to make it appropriate to the task in hand.

Survey Monkey

This service provides a limited free service, it however can have its benefits with its easy to navigate interface it making it the choice for many organisations when it comes to surveys. Again the paid option is one that should be selected as the free version is quite resricted

My example form can be viewed here: Click here to take survey

WooFoo

This service is another example of a decent online survey manager however it again is limited with the available features for free accounts.

It has the cleanest and simplest interface for users and its graphics can be changed to make it bespoke to the current job.

Marshmallow Challenge

The afternoon we had a training workshop that started with the marshmallow challenge to see how we worked as a team and our thinking methods. After the challenge we watched a short film by ted.com on the subject area show how everyone is different and has a different mental thinking plan. Technology Education Design have various useful online videos on such topics.

Our tower was the winning design, we went with simplicity over appearance and this paid off. With these challenge if you push the engineering side you can end up with nothing.

We learnt that the way you achieve the best results is with trial and error, using this method we can experiment with a vast amount of ideas and go forward with the ones that work out.

Twitter, Timelines & Microblogs

Today at the Trident Digital Village we were experimenting with many on-line Microblog services and 3rd party publishing applications for them.

Firstly we started at looking at online timeline services that allow you to publish content online in a managed easy to ready chronological order.

One of the best for online searches is Dipity this service provide the user to search a topic and the data that is pulled of the internet is put into an easy to read chronological time line.

We then looked at the more graphic intensive site Capzeles this site has a super attractive interface and is very flexible considering its a free service. I have managed to set up a site with in minutes.

We then looked at Twitter @digitaltrident and how we could embed our twitter time lines into our Dipity service.

Then we looked at ways to use 3rd party applications to manage our twitter accounts such as twitter clients brizzlytweetdecktweetie, and thwirl, and hootsuite theses all have there pros and cons and serve different purposes.

Online Mapping – Creating Event Listings

Today we looked at the online map services including Google mapsBing MapsMultimaps and beta services such as Mapumental.

We went through the process of creating custom maps with events that are embeddable to websites and blogs. Using this process we created a map for trident house residents guiding them to the local attractions and venues of interest. This map below is publicly viewable to all allowing it to reach a wide demographic.

We also looked at adding events to local event site DigitalBrum, This allows us to advertise events around Birmingham to a wide number of subscribers using the website and rss feeds.

Creating Wiki’s & Online Task Management Tools.

Today we continues with created the Trident Digital Village Wiki site, we have added content to each sup page and linked them in with our individual personal blogs. We will need to continue updating the wiki site as the project progresses, however the interface is a little tedious and personally think in the future we should move to creating a bespoke website for the Digital Village Project.

We also all signed up for Live Brum accounts so we can keep up-to-date with local events and activity so we can pass on information through our blogs and publications.

The second part of the day we took a look at online task management tools, as throughout the duration of this project we will be working in partnership with Meshed Media who will manage the project remotely and visit the site 2 days a week. So we are going to utilize online task management tools in order make sure productivity is well managed.

Here are a few of the online task management tool I looked at:

Remember the Milk’s got all the best features modern webapps have to offer: email/SMS/IM integration, tagging, advanced search, keyboard shortcuts and even offline access with Google Gears. Chances are you work across several computers and need a single, always-accessible place to consolidate your work, personal, school, and family to-do’s. Remember the Milk is a great way to do just that.
Ta-da List is the web’s easiest to-do list tool. Make lists for yourself or share them with others. It couldn’t be simpler. Made by the industry leading timetalbe managers 37Signals.

Todo List, Always have your todo list at hand. You can get Toodledo on your mobile phone, in your email, on your calendar, in your RSS reader, via IM, and integrated directly into your web browser. You can even print up a special foldable booklet that will fit in your pocket.

37 Signals has three different products with to-do list capabilities depending on the nature and scope of the work:

– Basecamp – Large Group Project Management and Group Collaboration

– Backpack – Solo or Small Group. Like having a personal intranet.

– Highrise – Contact Management. Keep track of who your business talks to, what was said, and what to do next.

Google Calendar, especially if you want to share that to-do list with others. My favoriote to-do list as it fully scyronises with portable devices, best part of it is its free!
And we finished the day with a online film  Us Now A film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the internet.
